TOP TEN REASONS TO SUPPORT THEATRE ODYSSEY

  1. Theatre Odyssey is the only local theater that sponsors full productions of original, never-before-performed ten-minute plays written by Gulf Coast playwrights.
  1. Theatre Odyssey is a not-for-profit theater company based in Sarasota. It relies entirely on ticket sales and private donations from corporate sponsors and individuals to fulfill its mission.
  1. Theatre Odyssey is a respected member of the vibrant Sarasota/Bradenton theater scene. Currently in its eleventh season, Theatre Odyssey has produced more than 80 original plays since 2006.
  1. Theatre Odyssey’s plays utilize dramatic and comedic forms to explore social issues of national and local import, such as racism, homelessness and aging.
  1. In January of each year, Theatre Odyssey produces a Student Ten-Minute Playwriting Festival. This festival takes place at the David S. and Anne V. Howard Studio Theatre at the State College of Florida, Bradenton Campus. It showcases selected original plays written by area high school students. The first- and second-place playwrights as determined by a panel of judges are awarded scholarship money.
  1. In May of each year, Theatre Odyssey produces a Ten-Minute Play Festival. This Festival is staged at the Cook Theatre at the FSU/Asolo Center for the Performing Arts in Sarasota. It showcases eight plays selected based on their artistic merit from dozens of submitted works. The first- and second-place playwrights as determined by a panel of judges are awarded cash prizes.
  1. Theatre Odyssey’s Student Ten-Minute Playwriting Festival helps develop the next generation of young playwriting talent. It empowers first-time playwrights by allowing them to see their words and dramatic imaginations come to life.
  1. Theatre Odyssey’s Ten-Minute Play Festival advances the careers of adult playwrights by providing them with exposure and professional recognition for their work.
  1. Theatre Odyssey supports local professional actors. Every Theatre Odyssey play is directed by local directors and performed by local talent.
  1. Theatre Odyssey has a grant in process that will enable it to be the only local theater that performs original, award-winning plays in assisted living centers, bringing the joy of the theater to those unable to travel.
